Getting Started
1. Download the App
Download Gentle Jot from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). The app is free to download and use, with optional Premium features.
2. Log Your First Mood
Open the app and tap an emoji that represents your current mood. That's it! You can optionally add a short note (1-5 words) or select tags, but it's not required.
3. Explore Settings (Optional)
Customize your experience by:
- Setting up biometric lock for extra privacy
- Configuring gentle reminders
- Customizing emojis and tags
- Choosing your preferred theme
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I log my mood?
Simply open the app and tap an emoji that represents how you're feeling. Optionally, you can add 1-5 words to describe your mood, and select relevant tags. That's it! The whole process takes just 5 seconds.
Is my data really private?
Yes! All your mood data is stored exclusively on your device. We don't have servers, we don't collect your data, and we can't see your entries. Your privacy is absolute.
Can I use Gentle Jot without an internet connection?
Absolutely! Gentle Jot is fully functional offline. You never need an internet connection to log moods, view summaries, or use any core features.
What happens if I lose my phone?
If you have device backups enabled (iCloud or Google Backup), your data may be restored when you set up a new device. Otherwise, mood data is stored locally and will be lost with the device. We recommend enabling device backups if this concerns you.
How do I export my mood data?
Go to Settings > Export Data. You can export your mood history as a CSV file, which you can open in Excel, Google Sheets, or share with your therapist.
What's the difference between Free and Premium?
Free includes unlimited mood logging, 7-day summaries, custom tags, basic reminders, CSV export, and biometric security. Premium adds historical trend analysis (30, 90-day, all-time), advanced notifications, enhanced filtering, and priority support.
How do I set up biometric lock?
Go to Settings > Security > Biometric Lock. Enable it and configure your preferred timeout (1 minute to 6 days). You can also set up a PIN/passcode fallback.
Can I customize the emojis?
Yes! Go to Settings > Manage Emojis. You can customize the default 12 emojis and their emotion levels to match your personal emotional vocabulary.
How do I set up reminders?
Go to Settings > Reminders. You can set 1-5 reminders per day at specific times or random intervals. All reminders use gentle, non-pressuring language.
Will there be a web version or desktop app?
We're focused on mobile-first for now to maintain our privacy commitments and offline functionality. A desktop version may come in the future.
How do I cancel my Premium subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Go to your device's subscription settings to cancel. Your Premium features will remain active until the end of your billing period.
The app isn't working properly. What should I do?
First, try restarting the app. If issues persist, try restarting your device. Still having problems? Email us at support@gentlejot.app with details about the issue and your device model.

Common Troubleshooting
App crashes or freezes
- Force quit the app and reopen it
- Restart your device
- Ensure you have the latest version installed
- Check if you have sufficient storage space
- If issues persist, contact support
Biometric lock not working
- Ensure biometric authentication is enabled on your device
- Check that Gentle Jot has permission to use biometrics
- Try using the PIN/passcode fallback option
- Re-enable biometric lock in app settings
Reminders not working
- Check that notifications are enabled for Gentle Jot
- Verify reminder times in app settings
- Ensure "Do Not Disturb" isn't blocking notifications
- Check your device's battery optimization settings
Can't export data
- Ensure you have mood entries to export
- Check that you have storage permission
- Try exporting to a different location
- Verify you have sufficient storage space
